In Portugal he was known as Dom Fernando II. the Artist King, because he loved art, nature, and the new inventions of the time. He was himself a watercolour painter, and devoted himself in his live patronizing arts.
For Pena Castle Ferdinand appointed a German architect, to build his summer palace filled with oddities from all over the World. His lifelong dream was to create this enchanting, extravagant place, which was finished in the year he died.
